Sometimes a person has to sit back and wonder why they do what they do. Why do people spend money on things that they know will suck? Why do people spend money on races where they KNOW exactly what they are going to get? I often ask myself that question. Why did I blow hundreds of dollars at the casino? Why did I get married when I know I wasn’t near ready yet? Yet I still did it. Why? Thats the thing, who the hell knows? Theres a lot of question marks in my life that I still haven’t figured out yet. Why was I a complete douchebag throughout my first years in the racing industry. Because I let what people tell me get in my head, and I believed that I was one of the best announcers there was. I was a mark for myself. An egotistical prick, who didn’t care who he had to walk over to get what he wanted. And where did I end up, still announcing in the same place, still spinning my wheels in obscurity. It all comes back to bad decision making. Lord knows it happens every weekend. A race fan will show up to his local track, give the front gate and the pit gate his or her money, and they will watch. They will either get the race of their lives, or they will see a complete abomination. They will see someone bust their ass and come from 24th to win, or they will see Thomas the Train Engine live. They will then proceed to go home, turn on their computer, and log into their favorite message board. Heres where the decision making comes in again. What do you say? Do you get on and completely rip on the promoter? Do you get on and rip on the track prep? Does that make you feel better? I can just see some of you standing up behind your computer screen doing the damn Hulk Hogan poses after you made some anonymous bashing comments about a track or promoter. “Hey look honey!! I just ripped him a new asshole on the internet!! Just wait until I see him in person, im going to pretend nothing ever happened and ill shake his hand and give him my money again!! But as long as he doesnt know who I am, its all good” At least show some balls and sign your name or take it up with the promoter personally. Thats why they post their phone numbers on their websites, simple deductive reasoning comes in handy sometime. A promoter is going to respect you a hell of a lot more if you take it up with them personally.

I know you read all of this and wonder “what the hell are you talking about?” It all comes back to bad decision making. What does getting online and ripping apart someone going to do? Its going to convince people NOT to come to the track and then your track is going to shut down. Then what do we do on the weekend? I sure as hell don’t want to sit at home and twiddle my thumbs. Although at the rate this sport is going, spending time with my two kids and my awesome, hot, sexy, Jordan doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Lets go to the races, enjoy ourselves, enjoy life, and for gods sakes buy a hot dog or two. Internet message boards are the worst worst worst thing to ever happen to racing. Hell the internet in particular is horrible for it. Long live the days where you sat in the stands and the only way you found out if your favorite driver was going to be there was to see him come out for hotlaps. Then you pointed and said “oh my god i cant believe hes here!!” Then you went back week after week just because you didnt know who would show up. My uncle Ira Bastin said it best “cant no one recreate my day, there wont be drivers like us anymore”

In non racing related news, Duke basketball still sucks, and if they didnt have three men in striped jerseys on their side, the NCAA trophy would be placed nicely in Hinkle Fieldhouse. And the UCONN womens basketball team arent women, they are men, men in wigs. Juwanna Mann was the starting forward.

So its been a few years since I have even attempted to put one of these out, so lets knock the rust off the Pinto and get rolling.

I’m not even going to start in the world of Motorsports, since the S.O.B. isn’t just about racing. Dixie Carter is a moron, a complete moron. Yeah, I said it. I am calling a complete multimillionaire a moron. I watch Pro Wrestling, admittedly and I think today’s product absolutely sucks the high hard one. This woman and her father buy into Total Nonstop Action wrestling, and turn it from one of the more exciting products to something I remember watching back in the mid 1990′s. What was it called? Its on the tip of my…yeah WCW. What ever happened to WCW? Oh yeah, its dead! Now you add Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, The Nasty Boys, Scott Hall, Sean Waltman, Ric Flair, Sting and you have WCW circa 2010. You HAD guys like A.J Styles, Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe, James Storm etc..etc at the head of the company and it was exciting. Now id rather watch paint dry, and slam my head off of a pad of concrete. Sting as a bad guy? Sorry, not buying it. The only thing worth watching anymore is some bootleg Dragon Gate, Ring of Honor, or PWG. Kenny Omega, the F’n man. And while youre at it, hey Vince, change your product back to anything other than PG and youll gain a viewer or two.

Indiana Basketball sucks. That is all I have to say on the subject. Oh yeah and Calipari is a cheating scumbag. Hire Kelvin Sampson to be your assistant. Connecticut womens team…men with ponytails.

I love inverts, start the fastest qualifier on the damn tail of the heat and give the fans their moneys worth. You dont win features qualifying, you dont win features by starting on the pole of the heat race, and you sure as hell dont win the feature WINNING the heat race. If you have a car “thats fast enough to win”, back up your statement and PASS A FEW CARS!

If I ever win the lottery, heres what im going to do. Full field invert. $1000 to every car you pass, in EVERY race. Even heat races. Ok back up a minute, im going to give a grand to the fastest car in HOT LAPS. There we go, lets grow a set right out of the trailer. Put on your big boy pants and lets mix it up in practice. Get the fans there early to watch that carnage. Think about how much fun it would be to see “Average Joe” in the hornets take out his sister for a grand. Imagine the family dinner on Sunday when Joe is waving 1K in his sisters face while shes eating and staring out the window at her now even more compact car. “But he took me out mom!!” says Jane. “Yeah, but im eating out tonight at some high class restaurant because ive got passion for the sport and im not afraid to pass somebody.” Joe says. “Have fun with your Easy Mac.” Basically, to sum it up, the fans are what pay your purses. If you put on a bland, boring, and blah product with no passing, they wont show up, you wont get paid, and youre going to be standing there next to that guy that we all love. Mr “Run up to your car and wash your window for a dollar”. Hey, its proven fact that they make some bank doing that sort of thing.

The racing season is upon us, the season opener at my home track is coming up on Saturday March 20th. I havent been to a race since the Billy Bob, doing live audio for the DRC. That was following my DTWC weekend where I was half dead with a 103 degree temperature, spend all my money at the Hollywood Casino, sleep in the front seat of a cramped truck adventure. Lets hope 2010 is a great season.

By Luke Matheson

One of the top up and coming open wheel modified racers from the Natural State is Batesville native Tyson Franks. At just 20 years old, Franks has already won his first points championship, winning the championship at Batesville Motor Speedway in 2009.

According to his website, www.TysonFranksRacing.com, Tyson started racing go-karts at the age 7, winning 4 points championships, 2 Arkansas national championships, finished 7th at the Tulsa Shootout out of 225 in 2002 and 12th out of 256 in 2004. He has over 80 feature wins and undefeated on coke syrup (including heats), and 2 Enik Sanders Memorial wins.

Franks recently sat down with us to discuss his career and the upcoming season.

“I started off racing in go-karts when I was around seven years old.” said Franks. “When I turned 16, I moved into an E-Mod, and the past three years, I have been in a full blown open wheel modifieds, and won my first points championship at Batesville last year.”

When asked if he was going to return to Batesville in 2010 to defend his title, Franks stated that he was not, but only due to the track going with an IMCA sanction this year.

“The IMCA deal is really good for local guys who don’t travel much.” said Franks. “There are ups and downs with the sanction, but we have decided that we are going to continue to run full blown mods and race with the USCS and USMTS guys. We will mainly race USCS, but if USMTS comes within about five hours, then we will probably hit them up. The game plan right now is to do that, and to try to find one really big show each month to go race.”

When asked what drew him into racing, and what keeps him in racing, Franks stated one simple thing. Speed.

“My favorite thing about racing is the speed.” said Franks. “I’ve never been afraid of going fast, or of high speeds. I just love to be able to go fast and to be able to control a machine that has so much power, and to control something that not everyone out there can control. There is nothing like modified racing. You have all of that horsepower and you are trying to keep it hooked up on those little tires, it is fun to control that, and try to make it around the track without hitting something or other cars.”

He also spoke about his favorite win to date.

“My first feature win at Batesville is without a doubt my favorite.” said Franks. “It was so cool because I had Jeff Taylor on my tail all race long, and I just knew that he was going to pass me on the last lap. I fully expected to look up and see him flying past me, but I was able to hold him off, and get the win.”

Tyson plans on racing the upcoming Batesville Mid-America Modified Championship in March, but not in his car.

“I’ll be racing the Mid-America Modified Championship again this year, but not in my car.” said Franks. “I’ll be driving for Charlie Armstrong that night. It is kind of funny because my cousin Richie Tosh and Charlie used to have some epic battles. They have claimed one another many times, and Richie told me that just because I am family, that does not mean he will not claim me if I finish in the Top 5, because I’m racing for Charlie, and that is just what they do to one another. Of course, I know he is just playing around, and we are just going to go out and do our best to get a win that night.”

Tyson is sponsored by Rockhard Powdercoating, Mark Martin Chevrolet, Griffin Transportation LLC., Bell Racing Products, Wayne Brooks Racing Engines, and ArkansasSpeedways.com.

By Luke Matheson

Competition is the one part of auto racing that brings more drivers and fans to the sport than any other factor in the business. Sometimes, that same competition can lead to friendships and partnerships that will lead two competitors into a winning combination. This has been the case for Benton, Arkansas sprint car racer Tim Crawley.

Crawley entered a partnership with Mike Ward of Memphis, Tennessee a few seasons ago, and the partnership has payed dividends for both Crawley and the Ward Motorsports Sprint Car team. The partnership was one that Crawley is glad to have formed, but had some “strange” feelings about in the beginning stages.

“It was strange getting with Mike after racing against him for many years.” said Crawley. “It was a great move though, and it is great to be teamed up with him and his people. He tweaks the motors and then pretty much lets me set the rest of the car up the way I want, and it has proved to be a successful combination for us. I feel that we have what it takes to win some big races and maybe even a series championship.”

Running a quality series is what Crawley and Ward plan to do in 2010.

“Things are looking really good for us right now as we prepare to head into the season.” said Crawley. “We retained pretty much all of the same sponsors who we had last year, and we are planning on running the ASCS National Series this year. The series is going to take us to some of the bigger shows in the nation like the 360 Nationals in Nashville and Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway at the end of the year, so we are really excited about the upcoming season.”

Speaking of the Short Track Nationals, Crawley said that is one of the races he would love to conquer the most.

“I’ve had some pretty bad misfortune at the Short Track Nationals.” said Crawley. “I’ve been pretty snake bit there in the past. We led the entire race a couple of years ago, then hit a bolt and cut a tire down on the last lap. I was having a good run last year, and got into a wreck and had to go to the year, so yeah, we have been pretty snake bit there, but we will get it one day.”

Tim Crawley and Ward Motorsports are sponsored by Senter Farms, Memphis Plating Works, Johnny’s Pro Auto Body, Southside Auto Parts, Jim’s Used Cars, O.H. Hendricks Sheet metal, Southern Renovations, MotorStands.com, Boater Sports, AMC Plumbing and Leak Detection, BackyardCity.com, Stinson’s Industrial, McCarver Race Engines, and MSRMafia.com

By Luke Matheson

As we all prepare for the 2010 racing season here in the Natural State, some of the premier drivers and series are also preparing for the upcoming season. One of those series includes Arkansas’ premier Super Late Model series, the Mid South Racing Association (MSRA) Late Model Series.

The MSRA Series had been in existence since 2006, and has been successful each year they have been racing in the region. I was able to catch up with MSRA Director of Competition, Chris Ellis, for his thoughts on the upcoming season.

“We are really excited about the upcoming season.” Said Ellis. “We have several dates on our schedule, and are still waiting to finalize a few more. We should have a couple of dates with the MARS Late Model Series over in the northwestern part of the state. It is so hard to draw from that area of the state, so we will continue our tradition of a couple of co-sanctioned shows with MARS in order to help keep super late model racing alive in that area. These should be our only co-sanctioned dates.”

Ellis touched on why the MSRA Late Model Series is a “must see” event for racing fans.

“If you are a super late model fan, then you will really enjoy our shows.” Said Ellis. “There are a lot of alternatives out there for fans and racers, but super late model racing is the best that there is. We offer quality racing and we field a strong group of veteran racers as well as some up and coming racers who have the potential to move on to big things in the coming years. We are a regional series that could almost be considered a farm series due to our up and coming drivers. We can help them get their feet wet, and used to touring, while they hone their skills as a driver and help prepare them to go to the next level.”

One of those young men includes defending MSRA point’s champion, Billy Moyer Jr.

“[Billy] is one of those guys for sure.” Said Ellis. “We look for him to tentatively return this season to defend his championship, but as with anything, that could change. There are a lot of things that go into a driver’s decision as to where he will race. Sometimes it is the economy, sometimes it is other things, but we feel Billy will be back with us this year. We do think he will probably move onto other venues after this season because he graduates college this year, but we do believe he will defend his championship with us this year.”

Ellis touched on his statement about the series being made up of both veterans and up and comers in the sport as well.

“I believe that we have without a doubt formed a niche in the business.” Said Ellis. “We offer a competitive series that travels on a regional level where you do not have to have a $40,000 motor to run with us. We offer the low budget teams a quality venue to race in due to our spoiler rule, and our tire rule. Add to that the fact that we run a lot of dry-slick tracks, you don’t have to have an 800 horsepower motor to come run with us. We have guys on spec motors who do really well, and who are winning races, and doing it on a small budget. This really helps some of the up and coming racers as well as some of the veterans who want to stick around the sport a little bit longer.”

Speaking of engine packages, Ellis also went over the rules for MSRA competition, and how the new all aluminum spec engine, and the GM Performance CT 525 Spec Engine will be affected.

“When you come to race with us, you can run any motor you want.” Said Ellis. “The thing is though, that everyone will be on the same tire rule, everyone will be on a 8 inch spoiler, and if you are on a aluminum block engine, you will weigh 2300 pounds, regardless of which motor it is. If you are on a steel block, you can weigh 2200 pounds.”

When asked what he feels his biggest shows are, Ellis stated that he feels all of their shows are big.

“We pay a minimum of $2,000 to win each night we race.” Said Ellis. “The money we pay out varies due to sponsorship for individual races, but we will pay at least $2,000 to win each night out. With that kind of purse for a regional series, and some of the smaller tracks that we go to, our show is the big show for those tracks. In the end, we just want to provide quality late model racing for the fans, put on a good show, help promoters put people in the stands, and give our drivers a place to race.”

The COMP Cams MSRA tour is sponsored by and would like to thank all of their sponsors including- COMP Cams, Hoosier Racing Tires, Kuntz & Company, Larry Shaw Race Cars, Quarter Master, GRT Race Cars, JFR Graphics, RiceTec, ROCKHARD Powdercoat, Inc., Mark Martin Auto Group , NEA Supergas, MSR Mafia.com Marketing Services, BSB Manufacturing, Boston’s Restaurant and Sports Bar Pizza, Five Star Bodies, Joe Gibbs Racing Oil, & FSR Racing Products
